ABÚT Paseo Project for VIVA EXCON

November 8-11, 2018

Abút: Paseo Project

Abút is a Hiligaynon word that means to arrive, come to, or to appear in the scene; it is a commonly used term to signify I will come.

This site-specific project is positioned at the Paseo Cathedral, a small local shopping arcade between the city hall and the church wherein local enterprising Capiznons sell their products and offer small services, as well as a meeting place for younger locals. The term “paseo”, of which the area is named after, is originally from the Spanish verb that means to walk or stroll.

ABÚT: Paseo Project is set to activate the space further through three components: Roxas mapping, interventions, and performances. Fittingly titled and through the simple gesture of walking, the public turns into active participants as they are made to engage with aspects of the Roxas city landscape merged with varying cultures and practices brought forth by artists across the Visayas region.

A mural map of Roxas city is installed upon entering the Paseo. Initiated by Urban Sketchers Capiz, local residents are invited to share interesting and significant sites known to them.  It may be a well-known isawan stand, a barber shop that has good massage, or a cheap 2nd hand shop. A guide and tip for both local residents and visitors, it is also a way to know how the city moves and functions.

Using several sites inside and outside the Paseo, artists are invited to create new works dialogues with the city. This integration looks at the experience of art on the level of everyday and how it can usher in conversations. Interventions include works by Cebu-based artist collaboration Happy Garaje (Mark Deutsch and Johanna Velasco Deutsch), Joseph Ingking (Bohol), Ginoe Ojoy (Bacolod), and a collaboration by Roxas-Tacloban street artists.

Lastly, Mirjam Dalire (Dumaguete), Sam Penaso (Bohol), Capiz Mangaka Union Cosplayers, and Mindworks (Cebu) are going to hold performances on the launch of VIVA EXCON CAPIZ 2018. With no formal stage, the artists blur the boundaries between the work and the audience, making the experience more intimate and significant.
